Inspired by The Reclamation Project and the city it was born from, A Contemplation of Mangroves invokes the essence of Miami and the natural beauty that defines South Florida. Produced alongside a scientific inquiry into sea-level rise at the Institute of Water and Climate Risk, this painting and the depiction of its process complete a study on tidal inundation and the invading sea.

As sea levels rise, how will we reckon with managed retreat? We look to Miami for the answer and find a solution on her shores; A forest of migrating mangroves, breaking waves and fortifying land, filtering our freshwater supply, rich with the endless blessings of biodiversity and an ecosystem we’d do well to accommodate and protect.

An interesting thing happens when we paint the future we hope to inherit,

we become authors of its cause.
